The Spanish national team received unwelcome news ahead of upcoming commitments, as Porto announced that their young striker Samu Omorodion suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear, casting significant doubt on his participation in the upcoming World Cup.
The Portuguese club explained in an official statement that the player sustained a right knee sprain during their match against Sporting Lisbon, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Monday evening. The injury occurred in the 45th minute, leading to his substitution at halftime by Turkish player Deniz Gül, after attempting to complete the final minutes of the first half.
Porto indicated that the player will undergo further examinations in the coming days to determine the treatment plan and recovery period. Initial estimates suggest he will be out until the end of the season, reducing his chances of making it to the World Cup.
This injury adds pressure on the Spanish national team, especially after Mikel Merino recently underwent surgery, leaving his participation in the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada uncertain.
Since his debut with the national team in November 2024, Samu has played in four international matches without scoring. At the club level, he is having an outstanding season with Porto, scoring 20 goals in 32 matches since joining from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024.
